Josh Fox is an Academy Award-nominated, Emmy Award-winning director, writer, actor, producer, musician, and journalist, as well as artistic director of the International WOW Company. His latest film, “The Welcome Table,” is a five-continent epic examining how climate change will displace billions of people and cause the largest mass migration in human history. It premiered on HBO in June 2026.

His landmark film “Gasland” helped galvanize the worldwide movement against fracking and other forms of extreme fossil fuel extraction. Fox toured with the film and its sequel, “Gasland Part II,” to 500+ cities, supporting environmental organizations around the world and playing a pivotal role in successful campaigns to ban fracking in New York State and the Delaware River Basin, the water source for 16 million people.

Fox’s environmental activism spans grassroots organizing, national politics, and large-scale public action. A Bernie Sanders surrogate in 2016 and 2020, he also served on the 2016 Democratic Platform Committee, where he wrote a key amendment restricting fracking and other forms of extreme energy extraction. He also co-founded The Solutions Project with Mark Ruffalo, Mark Jacobson, and Marco Krapels. In 2024, Fox and John Boutté organized one of New Orleans’ largest climate demonstrations, a second line of 1,000+ people culminating at a 1,000-foot-long table symbolizing solidarity with climate migrants.

In addition to his Academy Award nomination and Emmy Award for directing, Fox has received four additional Emmy nominations, a Sundance Special Jury Prize, a Writers Guild of America nomination, an International Documentary Association nomination, the Cinema Eye Honors Hell Yeah Prize, the LennonOno Grant for Peace, and three Environmental Media Association Awards for best documentary.

He has appeared regularly on MSNBC, Fox, CNN, “The Daily Show,” “Real Time with Bill Maher,” PBS and TYT. His journalism has appeared in Rolling Stone, The Daily Beast, The Nation, and USA Today, with viral op-eds featured by NowThis, AJ+, Adbusters, and HuffPost. His 2016 reporting from Standing Rock received 40 million+ views.

Fox’s landmark climate films also explore a range of issues, including: “How to Let Go of the World and Love All the Things Climate Can’t Change”, an exploration of climate despair; “Awake: A Dream From Standing Rock” which chronicled the uprising against the Dakota Access Pipeline; “The Edge of Nature” documenting COVID-19 and the “anthropause,” the only period in which Western civilization reduced greenhouse gas emissions; and “The Truth Has Changed,” a solo performance examining the use of misinformation as a propaganda tool across social media and the internet. His first feature, “Memorial Day,” produced by Jim McKay and Michael Stipe, opened at IFC Cinemas following a controversial premiere at CineVegas.

Over nearly three decades, Fox has also created more than a dozen stage works with the International WOW Company, which he founded, exploring urgent political, environmental, and social issues in productions presented throughout the United States, Europe, and Asia. His theater work has earned three National Endowment for the Arts grants, multiple MAP Fund grants, a Drama Desk nomination, an Asian Cultural Council fellowship, and an Otto Award.
